CityChess was born from a shared passion for design, craftsmanship, and iconic cityscapes. Founded in Zaandam by Silvan Glorie and Ties Westerhuis, two visionary industrial designers, our mission is to merge the timeless strategy of chess with the architectural beauty of cities around the world.

Inspired by local craftsmanship and sustainability, we create unique chess sets that transform beloved city landmarks into beautifully designed chess pieces. Each set is more than just a game—it’s a tribute to history, culture, and design, crafted from carefully selected rest materials like MDF to ensure minimal waste and maximum impact.

Meet Our Founders

CityChess was founded by Silvan Glorie and Ties Westerhuis, two industrial designers who first met during their Product Design studies at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. What started as a shared curiosity for materials, craftsmanship, and sustainability soon evolved into a deep friendship and ultimately a business partnership driven by innovation.

With backgrounds in product engineering, industrial design, and sustainable manufacturing, Silvan and Ties wanted to create products that combine design, function, and cultural storytelling. CityChess embodies this vision—merging architecture and strategy, transforming iconic city landmarks into unique chess sets that celebrate history, craftsmanship, and intelligent design.
